AI, Deepfakes & the Law: Do You Have the Right to Your Own Digital Identity?

We invite you to watch another podcast featuring Dr. Anastassia Lauterbach. In her conversation with Gabriela Bar, key issues related to the legal aspects of artificial intelligence were discussed.

The discussion covers three interconnected areas:

  • the philosophy of legal personhood and the question of whether AI could ever qualify for it;
  • the alarming lack of real legal protection for individuals whose digital identities are exploited through deepfakes and fabricated content;
  • and the statistical scale of children’s exposure to predatory behaviour in digital environments.

The fundamental question is not whether AI systems (or other digital entities) should be granted a certain legal status, but rather when and for what purpose this should occur.

At the same time, as Anastassia Lauterbach rightly points out, we are already facing a more immediate issue: situations in which a person’s digital identity is manipulated, replicated, and used to generate intimate content without their consent – with almost no effective legal protection available.

We encourage you to listen to this highly engaging and thought-provoking conversation.
